The Balkans
“Sarajevo ljubavi moja” is a song appreciating the beauty, diversity, fragility and strongness of Sarajevo. The beautiful city in the valley of the dominant mountain of Trebevic. There could not be a better summary of the amazing times we spent in Sarajevo, and Bosnia and Hercegovina in general. It was a period of adventures, amazing mountains, inspiration from strong people.
Sarajevo is such a pulsing city, and yet the calming old town of Baščaršija with the muezins early morning songs, passionate, dramatic, sometimes relaxing. Yes, Sarajevo got under our skin and the 4 years of our family living there, exploring the region and its strong history and background is simply unforgettable.
Everything was real there – that is how I will always remember BiH. Really beautiful nature and impressive mountains of Bjelašnica, Prenj, Visočica, really strong summer thunderstorms in Sarajevo, sometimes really crazy drivers on the roads, really cold weather when skiing. The omnipresent olympic spirit of the 1984 winter games and its proud heritage. Old castles reminding the bosnian kingdom, Baščaršija demonstrating the Osman period. Really strong and brave people (not only diving from Mostar bridge), of all ethnics living in BiH and touching stories from the war period and its history. A place where it has been proved that different cultures/beliefs can live and respect each other for centuries, though there are periods of awful pain and sad stories. Lessons not to be forgotten but to learn from for the future.
My dad adds it is specific like bosanska kafa (traditional coffee) – you love it or you cannot drink it. Bosnia and Hercegovina, ljubami moja! I would love to and will go back one day…
